5 Basic Coffee Recipes to Try at Home or Sell for a Profit
Learning the basics is a great first step toward creating coffee drinks of your own. Once you understand the fundamentals of brewing, you can come up with new drinks and adapt recipes to suit your taste. So let’s take a look at 5 basic coffee recipes you can try.
Cappuccino
This coffee originated in Vienna in the 19th century. Made with a small amount of coffee mixed with milk and cream, it has a light brown color, similar to the robes worn by monks at the time, though the two are not actually connected. There’s a simple rule for making it, the 1/3 rule:
– 1/3 espresso
– 1/3 milk
– 1/3 milk foam
Today, however, the ingredients are often used in a 1 : 1 : 1 ratio, with equal amounts of each.
Café LatteAnother espresso-based coffee, the latte was created to balance espresso’s intense, bitter taste with added sweetness and smoothness from hot milk. The milk helps soften the bitterness, and milk foam is added as well.
AmericanoThe Americano was created during World War II, when espresso was considered too strong. It was diluted with water to make it milder. It’s very easy to prepare: simply pour clean hot water into a cup, then add a Double Espresso. If your espresso machine has a boiler for steam, it should also be able to dispense hot water. However, if the machine hasn’t dispensed water for a long time, the water may not taste good.
CortadoThis coffee drink originated in Spain. It’s made with a larger serving of espresso, though milder than the Italian style, at around 30 ml, and an equal amount of steamed milk. It’s also often served in a clear glass rather than a ceramic cup.
If you have an espresso machine, these recipes are ideal, since you can make all of them with it directly, which makes preparation even easier.
