A coffee grinder is an essential piece of equipment for turning coffee beans into the delicious drinks you love. Grinders come in many different styles, each with its own way of working and best uses. There are also a few things worth knowing about coffee grinders if you want to try making your own coffee. Today, we’re sharing what’s worth knowing about coffee grinders.
What types of coffee grinders are there, and how are they different?
A coffee grinder is a device that processes coffee beans so they’re easier to use for brewing. You can choose from different grind settings to suit your preferences and the type of coffee you’re making. There’s more than one kind of coffee grinder, including the following:
– Burr GrinderBurr grinders are available in both manual and electric models, and are popular around the world. They use two burrs that fit together. You can adjust the distance between them to change the grind size. Burrs come in 2 types:
Flat burr
Flat burr grinders have two burrs that fit together. One rotates, while the other can be adjusted to change the distance between them and select the grind size. The closer the burrs are, the finer the coffee grounds. One advantage is that they preserve the quality and quantity of your coffee, with very little ground coffee left behind. It’s also easy to adjust the grind size, especially for coarser grinds.
Conical burr
Conical burrs fit together around a central axis, with an inverted cone-shaped burr rotating below and the central shaft above. The shaft moves up and down to adjust the distance between the burrs. The closer the burrs are set, the finer the coffee grounds.
One advantage of this type of burr is that it produces grounds of a similar size, helping brewed coffee taste consistent and well balanced. It also grinds at a lower speed, which helps reduce heat buildup in the grinder and allows for more continuous use than flat burr grinders. However, compared with flat burrs, more coffee is lost each time you adjust the burrs.
– Whirly Blade GrinderA blade grinder is similar to a standard grinder. A blade attached to a motor spins and breaks up the coffee beans. You can easily adjust the grind size yourself, but the grounds will be uneven, which is a drawback of this type of grinder. However, blade grinders are easy to find and simpler to use than burr grinders.
